These Blue Eyes

I’ve looked into the eyes of a tiny human we made together
And saw the soul God wove from our inner beings.

The vision of autumn splendor in red, green and gold
On early morning walks reminds me God is an Artist.

Seeing an elderly couple walking slowly hand in hand
Tells me love and patience can last a lifetime.

My eyes plant beautiful flowers in my mind
To pluck on cold, lifeless mornings and feel new again.

When distant memories of my parents fade,
I look at cherished photos or a card they penned for me.

Love and kindness over spite and bitterness
That is what I see with these blue eyes.

Just Tell Me

Tell me my smile melts your heart
Tell me you enjoy laughing with me

Tell me again about how we met
Tell me why you want to hold my hand

Tell me you want to share my pillow tonight
Tell me how you love my soft snoring

Tell me you are jealous of my blue eyes
Tell me we are star-crossed lovers

Tell me you will give me the last bite of chocolate
Tell me I am not old and fat

Tell me how much I matter
And I’ll melt in your arms again

Missing Mama

I wish you were here to teach me how to be an old woman,
And how to cope without a loving husband.

You were a widow, and I am your only daughter to divorce.
You were there for me and gave me a birthday party.

Mama, how did you deal with all the physical pain on cold, rainy days?
I still miss your potato soup and carrot salad on those days.

What did you do on all your lonely nights?
How did you get through it all?

I think I know the answer.
It wasn’t just one thing.

You told me you prayed a lot.
I know you used to sing…one day at a time, sweet Jesus.
You got dressed up, put on your happy face and made friends out of strangers.

I’m missing you, Mama.
Sure wish you were here to guide me through old age.
